As I entered the apartment, I noticed that the layout incorporated an open plan living and dining area that led onto a beautiful terrace facing the breathtaking Brisbane river. I thought to myself, “wow this apartment is extremely versatile, if I was renting this apartment there is so much that I could do with this space!” Many rentals face the challenge of complex or akward floor plans and so I knew that a well-lit, open plan and elevated living/dining facing the river would be any renter’s dream. 

In saying that, there was one obstacle that I definitely was going to have to work around. The current renter had left her large timber working desk in the middle of the apartment – and even though the apartment was extremely clean and well kept, I felt the large bulky table took away from the openness of the space. I always ask for permission to adjust or temporarily move any furniture out of the way that I feel could potentially draw the viewer’s eye away from selling points and so the building manager agreed to remove the table. As we began to move it, it was definitely waaay too heavy and so we had no choice but to leave it in the shot. 

What I resulted in doing was using my angles to my advantage – Focusing on the length of the space without obstructing the viewer’s attention – this meant shooting from an angle that bypassed the table and focused on the size of the room and the view. I also removed all stationary from the table including shredder located underneath, laptop mats, printers and bin. 

Lessons learned:

I learned that working with the large table in the room would be more beneficial than simply moving the table or removing it in post-production. I realised that building credibility through photography is important and funnily enough, it could actually.
